Snow chances in GA growing. Here’s where, how much of the white stuff may fall, new forecast shows

Georgia could see anything from a dusting of snow to several inches this weekend and the entire state is officially on snow-watch. However, exactly what area will get what is still highly uncertain, according to Dylan Lusk, senior meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Peachtree City.

Whether we’ll see any snow depends heavily on the small shifts in the storm’s track, and experts are issuing a “low-confidence forecast” for snow, but that doesn’t mean our hopes aren’t up.

The forecast is extremely tricky

Lusk says the entire forecast hinges on where the incoming low-pressure system sets up, and there are several factors at play.

  • If the center of the storm tracks 50 miles farther south than current projections, much of central Georgia, including Columbus and Macon could see little more than light snow or flurries.
  • If the system tracks just 50 miles farther north, “decent snow” is possible from the Atlanta area into parts of central Georgia.

When is snow most likely?

For Georgia, the main window for wintry weather is over the weekend. According to the NWS’ website there is potential for a winter storm.

What we know:

  • A cold front will move in Friday night through Saturday morning and is likely to produce light precipitation
  • Another system will move across the Southeast Saturday night through Sunday with potential to product snow and/or a wintry mix

The likelihood of snow:

  • “Low confidence” but with growing potential
  • Limited meaningful accumulation expected
  • Details should become available by late Friday
  • Due to volatility, certain reports may be unavailable until the day-of

Stay informed

Lusk urges Georgians to stick with “trusted, official sources” and avoid “dramatic model images or snow maps” circulating on social media without context.

Best practices:

  • Stay updated with the National Weather Service in Peachtree City:
  • Go to weather.gov to pull up your local forecast and any advisories or warnings.
  • Follow “US National Weather Service Peachtree City Georgia” on Facebook, Instagram and other social media outlets.

Be prepared:

  • Brace for a very cold weekend
  • Keep plans flexible late Saturday night into Sunday morning
  • Get your home ready for cold weather
