Is it OK to slow roll through a GA stop sign if nobody is around? Here’s what state law says

If you’ve ever been tempted to just pull a “California roll” through a stop sign in Georgia, you might want to rethink it. You cannot legally roll through a stop sign, even if it seems like no one else is around.

State law requires a complete stop at every stop sign, so even if you think the coast is clear, violating the law can result in a ticket if observed by law enforcement or proven in court

How long do you have to wait at GA stop sign?

Georgia law doesn’t have particular specifications about a set time, however, you must come to a complete stop.

The state code mandates drivers:

  • Stop at a clearly marked stop line, or if no stop line
  • Before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection or if there is no crosswalk
  • The point nearest the intersecting roadway where the driver has a view of approaching traffic on the intersecting roadway before entering

Who goes first at a four-way intersection?

At a four-way stop in Georgia, the rule is that the first vehicle to arrive has the right of way, but what if more than one car arrives?

  • Two or more vehicles arrive simultaneously, the vehicle on the right has the priority to proceed first
  • Driver must yield to vehicles already in the intersection

What are the penalties for violations?

Failing to stop completely at a stop sign in Georgia is classified as a misdemeanor.

Penalties can include:

  • Fines ranging from $150 up to $1,000
  • Three points added to your driver’s license
  • Potentially increased insurance premiums
  • License suspension (after accrual of many points over a 2 year period)

While a “rolling stop” may be a fairly routine practice, it’s still against the law and can cause some pretty costly consequences.
