GA has one of the 10 best haunted hotels in the nation, USA Today says. Here’s why

If spooky season is your favorite, then Georgia is the right place for you. Aside from being ranked among the most haunted cities in the US, Savannah’s Marshall House has earned a top spot in USA Today’s Best Haunted Hotels.

The famed Marshall House earned the 7th place in the 10 Best Readers’ Choice list of Best Haunted Hotels in the US.

The history of The Marshall House

Opened in 1851 by Mary L. Marshall, The Marshall House is the oldest continuously operating hotel in Savannah. It was originally built in the city’s premier shopping district, gaining renown for its huge iron veranda.

A few years later, the hotel was occupied by General Sherman during the Civil War and served as a Union Hospital for wounded soldiers until the end of the war and served as a hospital for two Yellow Fever epidemics.

The Marshall House earned its spooky fame

As a former hospital, there’s no end to the tragedies and atrocities those walls have seen and its this long history that has established The Marshall House as one of the most haunted hotels in the country.

The hotel leans into its spectral fame and guests routinely report hearing footsteps in hallways, faucets turning on by themselves, voices in the night, and phantom children running down corridors.

The hotel itself acknowledges these stories with a wink and loves to recount its ghostly beginnings. In past years, it’s ranked even higher. It was number three in 2024, so it’s no stranger to the spotlight among ghost aficionados.

If you want to visit the Marshall House

If you’re visiting Savannah and want something a little more atmospheric, ask for rooms on the higher floors (especially the 4th) where strange phenomena are most often reported.

Don’t skip the ghost tours, either. Local guides can walk you through the hotel’s darker corners and tell its most sordid secrets. You may even catch a glimpse of a Union soldier who took his last breath in the spot where you’re standing.

Whether you’re a believer in the paranormal or just someone who enjoys a good ghost story, The Marshall House could be your spooky season destination.
