Teen shot by Uber driver at Waffle House in fight over space in car, GA cops say
A 16-year-old girl was shot by an Uber driver outside a Waffle House restaurant in Georgia, authorities say.
Five girls requested a ride from Waffle House around 2:30 a.m. Oct. 5, but when their driver arrived, he said he only had space for four of them, the Dunwoody Police Department said.
This led to an argument over who should cancel the Uber trip, police said.
Riders are allowed to cancel a ride after they’ve been matched with a driver, but they may be charged a cancellation fee, Uber says.
The fight escalated, and the driver said one of the girls threatened to kill him, police said. The driver, identified as 38-year-old Meredith Grundy, alleged the girl hit him in the face, investigators said.
“The driver then fired a gun and struck the female who assaulted him,” according to a police news release.
The 16-year-old victim was taken to an Atlanta hospital, where she was treated for her gunshot wounds, police said. She was listed in “critical but stable condition.”
According to an arrest warrant obtained by WXIA, the girl “was shot four times, in the shoulder, buttocks and legs.”
Police said the other girls told officers the threat and alleged assault by the girl happened after — not before — their driver fired shots.
Video evidence corroborated their story, as it showed the girl did not threaten Grundy, WXIA reported, citing the arrest warrant.
Grundy was arrested on charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during a felony, according to police.
It’s unclear if the 16-year-old girl will be charged.
An Uber spokesperson referred to the actions by its driver as “horrifying,” according to WANF.
“We removed the driver’s access to the platform and stand ready to support law enforcement with their investigation,” the spokesperson told the news outlet.
Dunwoody is about a 15-mile drive north from downtown Atlanta.
