Georgia taxpayers could have a little extra money in their pockets very soon, thanks to House Bill 112. Signed into law by Governor Brian Kemp this bill will send another round of special tax refund checks to eligible residents this week.

In an official press release jointly issued by Governor Brian Kemp and the Georgia Department of Revenue, Kemp said, “Because we’ve managed our state’s resources wisely, we’re again able to return money to hardworking Georgians who know how best to use it.”

What does the new Georgia tax bill do?

Last year, Gov. Kemp announced the Georgia Surplus Tax Refund would be a one-time tax refund for Georgians, that would use part of the state’s $16 billion surplus, saying, “here in Georgia, we’re working to give our people relief.”

Through HB 112, the refund amounts are:

  • $250 for single filers or married individuals filing separately

  • $375 for heads of household

  • $500 for married couples filing jointly

Who is eligible to get the refund?

According to the Department of Revenue, in order to qualify, you must:

  • Have filed both your 2023 and 2024 Georgia state income tax returns by the May 1, 2025, deadline (or October 15 if you filed an extension)

  • Have had a state tax liability for 2023

  • Be a full-year Georgia resident, part-year resident or nonresident with Georgia income

  • Not be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s 2023 return

  • Not owe money to the Georgia Department of Revenue (if you do, your refund may be reduced)

How will taxpayers get the money from the refund?

“Our Department is ready to get this third round of refunds out the door efficiently and securely,” said State Revenue Commissioner Frank O’Connell. Refunds are being issued starting this week and most taxpayers may get their money in the next few weeks, however, high filing volume may mean up to eight weeks for some.

  • Payments will be delivered the same way you received your refund, by direct deposit or paper check in the mail.

  • You don’t need to apply separately; if you’re eligible, the refund is automatic.

You can track your refund and check eligibility using the Surplus Tax Refund Eligibility Tool on the Georgia Department of Revenue’s website.

To check your status, you’ll need:

  • Social Security or Tax ID number

  • 2023 federal adjusted gross income

Capital B Atlanta advises the refund is not taxable for Georgia state income tax, but it may be taxable on your federal return

If you’re a Georgia taxpayer who filed on time and meets the criteria, you’re likely to see a refund, maybe even up to $500 per household, soon.
