Boy Scout leader sexually abused child, hid camera in bathroom, Georgia cops say
A former Boy Scout leader is accused of child sexual abuse and other crimes, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Andrew Howard Whaley, 61, was charged with aggravated child molestation, child molestation and possession of child porn, the bureau said in a May 25 news release.
Investigators accused Whaley of sexually abusing a boy he met during his time as a Scout leader. A search of his Forsyth County home turned up a hidden camera in the bathroom used to film minors, the bureau said.
Authorities didn’t say when the reported abuse occurred or if there could be more victims.
He was arrested May 16 and taken to the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office jail, where he remained as of Wednesday, May 28, online records show.
Attorney information for Whaley wasn’t immediately available.
The GBI said it began investigating child molestation accusations against Whaley on April 18. On May 16, the GBI and Lumpkin County sheriff’s deputies searched Whaley’s cabin and a Lumpkin County business, where they discovered child pornography, agents said.
Authorities said they then also found the hidden camera at Whaley’s home in Forsyth County.
In addition to child molestation, Whaley is charged with six counts of creation of child pornography and 13 counts of eavesdropping and surveillance in Forsyth County, investigators said.
The GBI didn’t release additional details but said the investigation is ongoing.
After it’s done, the case will be given to the Enotah Circuit District Attorney’s Office and the Bell-Forsyth District Attorney’s Office for prosecution, the bureau said.
Lumpkin County is about a 70-mile drive northeast from downtown Atlanta.
