A deer made a dash for the woods after a team of officers helped free it from a metal fence in Georgia, video of the rescue shows.

Officers with the Sandy Springs Police Department arrived May 9 to find the animal with one of its back legs caught between the bars, according to police body camera video posted on the department’s Facebook page.

A concerned resident called 911 after spotting the trapped deer, department spokesman Sgt. Leon Millholland told McClatchy News over the phone.

An officer responded and called for backup after realizing the animal could be saved — though it would take some extra muscle, Millholland said.

The deer grew frantic, trying to kick its way free as one of the officers approached and covered its face with a jacket, the video shows.

Once it calmed down, two other officers came from behind to steady the deer’s legs and free its hoof.

The first officer cradled the animal for a moment before setting it on the ground. That’s when the animal took off running, disappearing into the woods, the video shows.

“I didn’t know he could run that fast,” one officer said, chuckling.

The rescue went quickly, with the three officers freeing the deer in about a minute, according to Millholland.

Viewers praised the officers for their swift action — and playfully chided the deer for its abrupt exit.

“What? Not even a thank you from the deer? LOL,” one person commented. “Good job!! Thank you from all of us that love wildlife.”

“To protect and serve ALL residents of Sandy Springs,” wrote another. “Even the four legged ones.”

Sandy Springs is about a 15-mile drive north from downtown Atlanta.
