Investigation underway after driver swerves into oncoming traffic, gets killed in Macon

A driver died after a head-on collision with an SUV in Macon on Sunday, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

A Chevrolet van driver, later identified as 38-year-old Nickalous Green, tried to swerve around a vehicle but crashed into an oncoming Ford Exhibition SUV, deputies said in a news release. The SUV driver headed north, while Green headed south.

The incident occurred just after 2 a.m. on Pio Nono Avenue, the sheriff’s office said.

Green was taken to Atrium Navicent Health hospital and pronounced dead from “blunt force trauma” about an hour after the crash, Coroner Leon Jones confirmed. Green’s family was notified of his death.

The 37-year-old SUV driver was taken to a hospital and listed in stable condition, deputies said.

The collision was still under investigation Monday morning, deputies said. Anyone with related information was urged to call the sheriff’s office and ask to speak with a fatality investigator at 478-751-7500.
