A “sweet” shelter dog spent months in need of a home — then came good news.

“We worried he might spend a full year waiting, but fate had other plans,” a Georgia animal shelter wrote Sept. 23 on Facebook. “Sturgill’s adopters shared that they were specifically looking for a pup with just the right personality, and when they met him, it was love at first sight.”

The Atlanta Humane Society shared the heartwarming update after Sturgill spent nine months in its care. While the shelter didn’t say how he ended up in need of a home, past social media posts show the dog had become known for being playful and silly.

“His absolute favorite thing? Affection,” the shelter wrote on Facebook in January. “Sturgill adores being showered with pets and cherishes moments playing fetch. His goofy run and carefree nature make him a unique and lovable friend.”

Sturgill’s run — which a shelter volunteer once described as a “cross between a prance and a galumph” — emerged when he got the zoomies. When he wasn’t running, he showed interest in a range of activities, from hiking to lounging around, according to a blog post.

Then, after months waiting for an owner, a family met Sturgill and fell for him right away. He finally got a new home, kicking off his next chapter.

“From overlooked to overjoyed, Sturgill is now thriving and settling into his new life beautifully,” the shelter wrote. “Here’s to new beginnings and a lifetime of love for sweet Sturgill.”

The Atlanta Humane Society didn’t share additional information with McClatchy News on Sept. 25.
