Updated: Fire causes an alert at Georgia’s Plant Vogtle, flames extinguished
An alert was declared Tuesday afternoon at Georgia Power’s Plant Vogtle after a transformer fire, according to Georgia Power.
Georgia Power said the Alvin W. Vogtle Electric Generating Plant declared the alert at 12 p.m. Tuesday, and the alert was canceled at 2:36 p.m. after the fire was extinguished. The company said the public was not in danger at any point due to the alert.
“Trained personnel are working on recovery efforts in close coordination with federal, state and local officials,” Georgia Power said in a news release.
Plant Vogtle is a four-unit electric generating plant located near Waynesboro. It’s operated by Southern Nuclear and is co-owned by Georgia Power, Oglethorpe Power Corp., the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia and Dalton Utilities.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and state and regulatory agencies were notified of the problem. Georgia Power said there are four emergency categories designated by the regulatory commission, and “alert” is the second least serious.
“Our top priority is the safety and health of the public and our employees,” John Weissinger Plant Vogtle 1&2 site vice president, said in a statement.
Georgia Power encouraged residents to stay tuned to radio and television for updates. The company also said updates would be made available on GeorgiaPower.com, and on Georgia Power’s Facebook and X (formerly Twitter) pages.
