A man suffered a fatal fall while working a plumbing job at a Georgia high school, police say.

Robert Hall died Wednesday, July 12, after he slipped off a ladder and fell into a manhole, according to the Floyd County Police Department.

Hall, 34, was working with a third-party contractor at Armuchee High School in Rome when the accident occurred, WRGA reported, citing police.

Authorities said the hole was 25 to 35 feet deep. When he hit the ground, a witness said Hall initially stood up before collapsing again seconds later, according to an incident report.

First responders arrived to find him unconscious at the bottom of the maintenance hole, police said. A life flight was called to the scene as crews worked to rescue him.

Hall was eventually pulled from the manhole but died, police said.

“Robert was an amazing man who has left behind an amazing family!” according to a GoFundMe for the family. “His family like all of us were not prepared for this tragedy.”

Family members said Hall, survived by his fiance and four kids, was the sole provider for his family.

Floyd County Schools released a statement offering condolences.

“This accident has impacted our school system family and stakeholders in many ways and we are actively sending support to those directly affected by this,” the district said in a statement posted on Facebook.

Funeral details haven’t been announced.

Rome is about 70 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta.
