A teen driver is accused of hitting a 9-year-old girl in the street, then leaving, police in Georgia say. Now she’s facing charges.

Officers were called Monday, July 3, about a child that had been hit by a 2019 Nissan Sentra in Albany, according to the city’s police department.

Witnesses said a group of kids was crossing the road when the girl ran out and was hit, police said in a news release. The 16-year-old driver initially left but came back after telling the owner of the Sentra what had happened, according to the release.

The child was listed in “extremely severe” condition after the crash, police said.

Investigators said charges against the driver are pending but didn’t specify what offenses she could face.

McClatchy News reached out to Albany police for an update July 5 and was awaiting a response.

Additional information wasn’t immediately available.

Albany is about 180 miles south of Atlanta.
