Trucker’s travel dog plunges 12 feet into sewer during pit stop, Georgia rescuers say
A trucker’s canine companion needed rescuing after falling about 12 feet into a storm drain, Georgia fire officials say.
Trixie, an “over-the-road” driving companion, was exploring her surroundings during a pit stop when she fell in, according to Cobb County Fire & Emergency Services.
Fire rescue crews dropped in an air monitoring device and fashioned a rope system to lower a firefighter into the sewer, the department wrote in a Feb. 27 Facebook post. A short time later, Trixie and the firefighter were both hoisted to safety.
Photos shared by the department showed the dog and her owner reunited in a tight embrace, drawing dozens of reactions online.
“That poor baby!!” one person commented. “So glad they were able to save her!! Looks like dad had a rough day too!”
“Thank you gentlemen, well done, as always!!!” someone else wrote. “Her daddy looks mighty relieved and grateful!”
Open Road Driver’s Plan, which provides legal protection to CDL drivers, reported that more than half of truckers are pet owners — 40% of whom take their furry friends on the road with them.
“Not only do dogs provide you have a travel companion and a steady routine, but drivers who travel with man’s best friend are more likely to drive safely, have less stress and get more exercise,” according to the company’s website.
After Monday’s rescue, Cobb County fire crews said the truck driver’s dog is expected to recover.
“After a quick visit to the vet, we hear that Trixie is a little banged up, but she will be okay,” firefighters wrote.
Cobb County is about 20 miles northwest of downtown Atlanta.
