A propane explosion and fire last week that killed a Putnam County man happened at a rural distillery housed in a shipping container, officials said Monday.

The apparently accidental blast happened the morning of April 13 when a propane tank blew up at the site of a farming operation near the intersection of Georgia Highway 44 and New Phoenix Road, about 4 miles northeast of Eatonton.

The victim, 74-year-old Charles Roy Embry, operated Embry Farm Services.

On Monday, state fire officials said in a statement that the explosion caused “severe damage to the 80-square-foot” container

“The building was a distillery, and investigators believe an explosion occurred due to a propane gas leak,” the statement said.
