Parking garage collapse traps one and injures others in Atlanta, Georgia officials say
At least five workers were hurt Friday when a parking deck in midtown Atlanta partially collapsed, several outlets reported.
The accident occurred just after 11:30 a.m. when fire officials say the 11th floor of the pre-fabricated deck collapsed onto the 10th floor, leaving one person trapped in the rubble, WSB-TV reported. Officials said the garage was under construction.
It’s unclear what caused part of the structure to collapse.
Four of the five injured workers got out on their own, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Rescue crews had to use a saw to free the fifth worker, whose leg was trapped underneath concrete, FOX 5 Atlanta reported. He was then placed on a stretcher and lowered to the ground using a crane before being taken to a hospital, according to both outlets.
All five workers suffered non-life threatening injuries and are expected to be OK, officials said. A firefighter was also treated for “apparent heat stroke,” WSB-TV reported.
Several streets in the area remained closed as officials inspected the remainder of the deck to ensure there was no risk of further collapse.
“Right now there’s no danger because we don’t see the whole wall collapse coming,” a fire official told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “But you never can tell what will happen, so we’re not taking any chances.”
Those in the area are urged to use caution.
