Speedy Gonzalez evades capture for months after swiping mailbox checks, Georgia cops say

They finally caught Speedy Gonzalez.

The 35-year-old was accused of stealing checks from a mailbox in Suwanee, Georgia, a city northeast of Atlanta, in January, according to police.

A man told police that he put the checks in the mail to be sent to their intended recipients, but they had been snatched, Gwinnett County police said. A day later, the suspect purchased about $3,000 in products from a Home Depot — then returned them for cash.

Detectives identified the suspect as Gonzalez and sent out his photos seeking help in finding him.

The police urged Gonzalez to turn himself in, but he never showed up to be arrested.

Finally, a month and a half later, he was captured during a traffic stop on Saturday, police said.

He was also wanted by authorities in a neighboring county.

Gonzalez was charged with forgery, identity fraud, and theft by deception.
