State building coronavirus quarantine space in Monroe County

Gov. Brian Kemp announced the state was constructing a second quarantine space in Monroe County, northwest of Bibb.

In a release Friday afternoon, Kemp said the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) and the Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) are constructing a quarantine space for people who test positive for COVID-19 and are unable to self-isolate on the Georgia Public Safety Training Center campus in Monroe County.

The state will build 20 temporary housing units. There are currently no patients at the facility.

“This is one of many measures that we’re taking to prepare for any scenario,” Kemp said.. “I appreciate the hard work of GEMA, DPH, and Monroe County officials to protect the health and safety of all Georgians.”

The isolation area is the second one built by the state; the first is located in Hard Labor Creek State Park. At least one patient has been transported there. The Department of Public Health will provide medical care for patients.

Sunday, Kemp announced there were 99 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Georgia, with 20 in Fulton County, 19 in Cobb and 10 in DeKalb. One Georgian has died. There are no reported cases in Macon-Bibb County.
