8-year-old walks miles to get help for dying mom after 2 days in woods, GA cops say
A girl walked for miles to get help when her mom was in peril in the Georgia woods, officials say.
Mandi Michelle Morehouse, 32, became unresponsive after she and her 8-year-old daughter spent two days wandering in the wilderness, the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office told WJCL and other media outlets.
Morehouse was driving on a dirt road when her car ended up in a ditch, WSAV reported Tuesday.
After the crash, she and her daughter apparently made their way into the woods, according to the station.
But later, the 8-year-old decided her mom needed help, WJCL reported. After journeying alone for 3 to 4 miles, the child had a chance encounter, according to WJCL.
An off-duty emergency responder was using a metal detector when he spotted the girl and called 911, the Coastal Courier reports.
That’s when crews launched a search for the girl’s mother, according to the newspaper.
After combing a 200-acre area, officials found Morehouse’s body about 3 miles from the car wreck, the Coastal Courier reports.
The grim discovery was made in Riceboro, a city near the coast and roughly 40 miles southwestof Savannah.
Officials say the 8-year-old had “scratches and bug bites but was otherwise OK,” WSAV reports.
Morehouse and her daughter had been reported missing from neighboring Long County, according to multiple news outlets. Some reports spell her first name as “Mandy.”
