Earthquake rattles Georgia, geologists say

A 2.0-magnitude earthquake rattled part of Georgia on Thursday night, geologists say.

The tremor hit east of Stockbridge at about 8:15 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. People from the areas of the Chattahoochee National Forest and east of Vidalia told geologists they felt the quake, which was about 3 miles deep.

Some people near Atlanta reported “weak” shaking, with no damage. Others said they didn’t feel it at all, according to the USGS.

Stockbridge is roughly 20 miles southeast of Atlanta.

Tremors lower than 2.5 magnitude happen an estimated 900,000 times annually and typically are not felt, according to Michigan Tech.
