Carson, Clinton top Presidential Peanut Poll at fair

PERRY -- Republican Ben Carson and Democrat Hillary Clinton emerged as the top vote-getters in the Presidential Peanut Poll at the Georgia National Fair.

In all, 28,493 peanuts were tossed into jars for the poll.

Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp set up the poll to encourage participation in what's been called the "SEC Primary" on March 1, 2016. That's when voters from several Southern states, including Georgia, will pick a presidential nomination for each party.

Carson led all candidates from both parties with 8,576 votes, while Clinton finished with 2,513, according to a news release from Kemp's office.

In the GOP field, Donald Trump finished second with 8,099 votes. In the Democratic contest, Clinton bested Bernie Sanders, 2,513 to 929, the release stated.
