Elections

Early voting in Georgia runoffs is coming up. What’s on the ballot in Macon?

Middle Georgia voters will once again head to the voting booth soon to cast their ballots in various local and statewide runoff elections.

Races that determine the Democratic and Republican representatives of federal and state-level leadership positions will be on the ballot. Locally, the Macon Water Authority District 2 commissioner position is still up for grabs, as no candidate received a majority of the votes.

Election Day is slated for June 16, and early voting starts June 8 and goes until June 12.

Bibb County’s early voting locations are the main Board of Elections office at the Macon Mall at 3661 Eisenhower Pkwy., at the Elaine H. Lucas Senior Center at 132 Willie Smokie Glover Dr., and at Northminster Presbyterian Church at 565 Wimbish Rd. These locations will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. during the early voting period.

Early voting won’t be available at Theron Ussery Park due to summer activities, according to the elections board.

Macon Water Authority Runoff

Marshall Talley and Ron Lemon were the top two vote-getters for the MWA seat and will be on the runoff ballot.

In the May primary election, Talley received 32% of the votes, while Lemon received around 27%, according to official election tallies from the Macon-Bibb Board of Elections.

Talley campaigned on a “hard-no stance” on data centers that could strain the water supply, while Lemon said his business background could help the board run more efficiently.

The other two candidates, Renoalda Scott and Sharif Robbins-Brinson, received 23% and 17% of the votes, respectively, according to official election results.

The District 2 position was vacated after the previous commissioner, Desmond Brown, left the seat to run for chairman. He lost to incumbent Gary Betchel in the primary election, who received about 55% of the votes. Brown received 45%, according to the official election tallies.

Statewide Runoffs

Democratic and Republican voters in Middle Georgia also can vote for their representative in races for governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, commissioner of insurance, state school superintendent, commissioner of labor and U.S. Senate.

To see what’s on your ballot and find your polling location, visit the Secretary of State’s website at www.mvp.sos.ga.gov. The last day to submit an absentee application is June 5.

Voters cannot swap parties during the runoff; the party they voted in during the primary election will remain the same. A Democratic primary voter cannot swap to a Republican runoff ballot, for example.
