Georgia’s Jimmy Carter ‘can’t wait’ to vote for Kamala Harris, grandson says at DNC

Former President Jimmy Carter is fully supporting Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in the November election, his grandson said in a speech at the Democratic National Convention Tuesday.

Carter, who’s 99, wished he could be at the DNC Tuesday, grandson Jason Carter told the crowd while delivering remarks on stage. While the former president is not in good health, his grandson said he’s excited about Harris’ potential presidency and her run against former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee.

“For my grandfather, it was never about fame, recognition, accolades or awards,” Jason Carter said. “His legacy is measured by the lives he has touched and the good he has done. Kamala Harris carries my grandfather’s legacy. She knows what is right, and she fights for it. She understands that leadership is about service, not selfishness. That you can show strength and demonstrate decency. And that you can get a whole lot more done with a smile than with a scowl.”

Jimmy Carter, a Democrat, was elected president in 1976 and served from 1977 to 1981. He lost his bid for reelection in 1980 to Republican Ronald Reagan.

Jason Carter has in recent months provided updates about his grandfather’s health, confirming the Plains native is “coming to the end,” according to CNN. Jimmy Carter has been in hospice care for more than a year. Plans have been made to celebrate his 100th birthday in his hometown.

“Though his body may be weak tonight, his spirit is as strong as ever,” Jason Carter said at the DNC Tuesday. “My grandfather can’t wait to vote for Kamala Harris. She reminds us all that the promise of America remains unchanged.”

The Carters were not the only presidential family to voice support for Harris Tuesday. Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama gave speeches at day two of the DNC advocating for the current vice president.
