LIVE UPDATES: Bibb County voters approve penny sales tax by wide margin
Editor’s note: Early voting totals should be announced between 7 and 7:15 p.m. We’ll update this story with early and final vote tallies. If a candidate does not receive more than 50% of the votes in a race, then the top two candidates will head to a runoff election.
Macon-Bibb County
Maconites approved an OLOST, or Other Local Option Sales Tax, that will add a penny sales tax on the dollar for county purchases and services to allow a property tax rollback.
The revenue from the tax, an estimated $30 million per year, will be used for public safety services, road repair and more, according to county leaders. Macon-Bibb County property taxes will initially be reduced by 5 mills according to House Bill 575, and Mayor Lester Miller said the county expects property taxes to decrease around 35-40%.
