Byron plans Georgia Cities Week activities

BYRON -- City officials are inviting residents to help clean up Byron and visit City Hall to learn about the city's government Saturday through April 22.

City Council members discussed the upcoming activities in celebration of Georgia Cities Week during their regular meeting this week.

City Clerk Telina Allred said all residents are being asked to take part in cleanup efforts Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon at the city's cemetery, city parks and downtown.

On weekdays, displays highlighting the work of city government will be in the lobby of the Byron Municipal Complex during regular hours. She said on April 22 a free showing of the movie "Alvin and the Chipmunks-Chipwrecked" is planned in the complex's auditorium for residents and families. Free refreshment will be served.

The showing is at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. The City Hall-Byron Municipal Complex is located downtown at 401 Main St.

In other business this week, council members approved a resolution that calls for Mayor Larry Collins to sign a contract with Georgia Asphalt for paving work to be done under the city's 2016 Local Maintenance Improvement Grant from the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Allred said streets included for paving-repair work include portions of New Circle, Walker Road, Pat Joiner Boulevard and Pine Hill Circle.

Billy McDaniel, director of public works, said the overall project cost is $102,088 with $60,000 coming from the state. The city would pay the remaining $42,088.

The council tabled an agenda item to review the job description for its newly created position of director of economic and community development. Council members are waiting for related information from the Middle Georgia Regional Commission before approving a job description and pursuing someone to fill the post.
