Political Notebook: Registration deadline nears for presidential primary

Voter registration for the U.S. presidential preference primary ends Monday.

Unregistered voters interested in casting a ballot in the March 1 presidential primary can register through Monday at www.mvp.sos.ga.gov or by visiting the Macon-Bibb County Board of Elections or the Georgia Department of Driver Services.

Any registration sent through the mail has to be postmarked by Monday in order to meet the deadline.

Early voting for the primary runs from Feb. 8-Feb. 26 at the Macon-Bibb County Board of Elections office at 2445 Pio Nono Ave.

Voting on March 1 will take place at the various polling places throughout Macon but not at the election board office.

Also, there are several options for people interested in absentee ballots. Requests can be made by calling 621-6622 or by visiting www.mvp.sos.ga.gov or www.maconbibb.us/board-of-elections. Absentee ballots for the presidential primary have to be received by the elections office by Feb. 26 at 5:30 p.m.

They can be mailed to the Macon-Bibb County Board of Elections, P.O. Box 6297, Macon, GA 31208, faxed to 478-784-9774 or emailed to absentee@maconbibb.us.

MACON COMMITTEE MEETINGS RUN SMOOTHLY WITHOUT MAYOR

Macon-Bibb County Mayor Robert Reichert's absence from Tuesday's committee meetings led to remarks from several commissioners about the brisk pace of the meetings.

Serving in Reichert's place was Mayor Pro Tem Bert Bivins, who said it's "just a coincidence" that he led meetings that went relatively quickly. Tuesday's meetings were completed in a little more than two hours, compared to some committee meetings lasting for at least half a day.

During the committee meetings, commissioners approved a series of blight projects, a $1.6 million construction bid for Log Cabin Drive improvements and more. Those items are expected to be voted on by the full County Commission next week.

Reichert missed Tuesday's meetings because he was out of town.

DEMOCRATIC PARTY OF GEORGIA HOSTS TRAINING EVENT

Democratic voters in Georgia who live in the 2nd Congressional District are invited to take part in a training session for delegates who will travel to the national convention in July.

The training will take place Feb. 6 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Hunt Educational and Cultural Recreation Center, 600 Spruce St. in Fort Valley, according to a news release.

There will be 125 Georgians selected to attend the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia this summer, the release said.

U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop represents the district.

"The spirit of the Democratic Party is one of inclusion, and our district's delegates will emulate that spirit," said Kattie Vinson Kendrick, who serves as chairwoman of the Democratic Party of Georgia 2nd Congressional District. "Even if a Georgia Democrat has never participated in a party activity, we encourage them to attend this training and learn how they can have a front-row seat when our party nominates the next president of the United States."
