Political Notebook: Macon officials approve another Tattnall Square Park improvement
Tattnall Square Park will get a new sidewalk extending from the newly installed fountain to the parking lot.
The Macon-Bibb County Commission agreed this week to provide the labor to tear up concrete that's cracked in exchange for Chris R. Sheridan & Co. donating and building the new walkway.
The crack on the 205-foot sidewalk occurred while work was being completed last year on the park's fountain.
Mayor Robert Reichert also made a suggestion to install posts to prevent vehicles from driving onto the sidewalk. The county could spend up to $1,900 on the posts.
ANIMAL WELFARE CHANGES ON MACON-BIBB'S AGENDA
A revised ordinance proposal aimed at clarifying when an animal welfare officer can go onto private property is set to go before a Macon-Bibb County Commission committee next week.
Several proposed changes to the existing ordinance were removed from consideration after the changes were reviewed by the local district attorney and solicitor general over the past few weeks. This latest revision took out some of the language that was repetitive with state law, said Sonja Adams, director of the Animal Welfare Department.
"What we're doing is clarifying for the community what their rights are, because the way it's written currently is vague. ... It leads to some misconception about what we can and can't do," she said. "There are some instances where we have to obtain a warrant and some (extreme circumstances) where we don't have to obtain a warrant."
MACON OFFERS CANDIDATES TRAINING CLASS
The Macon-Bibb County Board of Elections will be holding a candidate qualifying training class Jan. 20, according to a news release.
The overview is to provide information to elected officials and potential candidates who wish to run for office during the upcoming 2016 general elections. The event will take place from 10:30 a.m. until noon at the Macon-Bibb County Government Center, 700 Poplar St.
The Secretary of State has implemented a new automated qualifying tool in an effort to make qualifying more efficient for candidates and qualifying officers. The Secretary of State rolled out the new electronic qualifying module during the 2015 elections on the state level. Now it is open to county election offices at the local level, the release said.
A reservation can be confirmed via email at cmaynard@maconbibb.us or by contacting Charlene Maynard, elections administrative assistant.
Questions about qualifying dates and times can be answered by contacting the Board of Elections office at 621-6622.
