Hewett wins Forsyth City Council runoff race
FORSYTH — A familiar face will return to City Council with the election of Chris Hewett in Tuesday's runoff race for the Post 2 seat.
The seat became open when Eric Wilson resigned to seek the mayor's position. He won that post last month.
Hewett, 64, received 352 votes to 42-year-old challenger Alleta Mays' 307 votes. The two opponents each gathered with a handful of supporters at the Monroe County Courthouse to wait for the election results Tuesday evening.
"The first thing I'm going to do is be sworn in tomorrow night and go to my first council meeting," said Hewett, a retired Monroe County school teacher who served on the council from 2004 to 2007. "I'm just looking forward to it, getting back into the politics of it. ... I was expecting (the race) to be even closer."
After results were announced, Hewett shook hands with Mays, who worked in the billing department at City Hall for years until 2012.
