Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democrats’ nominee for president via social media Sunday, after President Joe Biden announced he was dropping out of the 2024 race.

Biden made the announcement he would step aside Sunday and asked the party to throw its weight behind Harris.

In a X (formerly Twitter) post, Ossoff stated:

“Pres. Biden’s record and decades of service to the country are extraordinary and historic. Thank you, @POTUS. Vice President Harris is now absolutely the right candidate to defeat Donald Trump and unite our country. @KamalaHarris is prepared, ready to win, & has my full support.”

Sen. Raphael Warnock released a statement via Facebook and X praising Biden and offering his endorsement of Harris for president.

“President Joe Biden demonstrated again today that he is a selfless servant leader and a true patriot, and why he is one of the most effective Presidents of my lifetime,” Warnock said. “Joe Biden has always put the people first.”

Warnock said supported Harris, saying he is “proud to endorse her candidacy to be the next President of the United States.”

Macon Democrats urge unity

The Macon-Bibb Democratic Party has called for unity in wake of Biden’s withdrawal.

“In light of President Joe Biden’s announcement this afternoon that he is withdrawing from the 2024 presidential race, the Macon-Bibb Democratic Committee is calling for all Democrats to come together in a spirit of unity to protect our freedom and democracy in this critical election,” the party chair, Jaylan Scott, said in a statement.

Scott said Biden’s “legacy of restoring decency and competence to the White House will endure” and it’s important for Democrats to come together.

The statement said with the presidential election just months away, the Macon-Bibb Democratic Committee urges local Democrats to remain focused on supporting Democratic candidates up and down the ballot who will fight for working families, expand access to health care and education and tackle climate issues.

“The stakes in this election could not be higher,” Scott said. “While Democrats are fighting to protect the freedom and rights of every American, Republicans are working to undermine our democracy and roll back the clock on progress. Now is the time for us to put aside any differences, come together as one party and one people, and work relentlessly to elect Democrats at every level of government who share our vision for a more just, more prosperous, and more democratic America.”

The local democratic committee said it will mobilize volunteers to ensure support for Democratic candidates.
