Former President Jimmy Carter endorses Warnock for Senate, following Obama and Abrams

The Rev. Raphael Warnock received another endorsement from a former U.S. President in his campaign to represent Georgia in the U.S. Senate, and this endorser is a Georgian himself.

Former President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalynn Carter endorsed Warnock on Tuesday because of Warnock’s history of fighting for economic opportunities for all Georgians, according to a news release from Warnock’s campaign.

“During these difficult times, our nation must continue to march towards progress while holding fast to our American values of equality, justice and economic opportunity for all. Reverend Warnock knows the struggles Georgians are facing in this unique crisis — families losing health care, shuttered rural hospitals and record unemployment — all in the middle of a pandemic,” Carter said, in the release. “I am pleased to support his campaign to be our next U.S. Senator, because I know he will be the voice Georgians need in Washington to ensure every child and every family has an opportunity to thrive.”

The announcement followed several other endorsements for Warnock, including from former President Barack Obama, former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams and former Attorney General Eric Holder.

Warnock has consolidated Democrat support for his candidacy over the past few months and is neck-and-neck with the two leading Republicans in the race, Sen. Kelly Loeffler and Doug Collins.

Warnock launched his campaign in January and is competing for Loeffler’s seat in the special election with 19 other candidates. Loeffler was appointed to take Sen. Johnny Isakson’s place when he resigned due to health reasons at the end of 2019.

“President Carter’s legacy as a human rights champion and humanitarian from his time in the Oval Office to the ongoing work of the Carter Center are an inspiration to us all. I am honored to have earned his support in this campaign and look forward to continuing his legacy of service to our state and country in Washington,” Warnock said, in the release.
