Trump-Iran Peace Talks Update: Iranian Foreign Minister Arrives in Pakistan
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in Islamabad, Pakistan on Friday to meet with senior leadership in the country as the U.S. and Iran continue to seek a diplomatic end the Iran war.
This follows White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt informing reporters earlier in day that the U.S. would send Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to the talks.
However, it remains unclear if they will deal with Araghchi or another official from Tehran as the Tasnim news agency, which is affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), said that Araghchi has no plans to speak with American officials during his visit.
U.S. President Donald Trump earlier this week extended the ceasefire between the warring nations as he cited an allegedly fractured leadership in Tehran, saying that the U.S. is waiting for a “unified proposal,” indicating competing goals among different factions in Iran.
On Friday, Trump told Reuters in a phone interview that Iran is “making an offer, and we’ll have to see,” adding that he did not yet know the details of the proposal. When pressed on whom the U.S. is dealing with from Iran, Trump said he didn’t want to say, but that “we’re dealing with the people that are in charge now.”
In the meantime, the U.S. maintains its blockade of Iranian ports and remains prepared for renewed hostilities if talks fail.
