Less Than Half of Republicans Want a Passport With Donald Trump's Portrait

Less than half of Republicans said they would pick the passport with President Donald Trump's portrait on it, according to a new YouGov poll.

The State Department's announcement that the president's portrait would be included on new passports to commemorate the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence was met with ridicule from Democrats, but the new poll found that even many Republicans are not particularly fond of the idea, either.

The poll comes as the president's approval rating has continued to decline over recent months, having key implications for Republicans ahead of the midterm elections.

Only 40 percent of Republicans said they would select the passport with Trump's image, compared to 37 percent who said they would pick the passport without his portrait and 23 percent who were unsure which passport they'd select, the poll found.

Newsweek reached out to the White House for comment via email.

Passport With Trump's Portrait Rejected by Most Americans-Poll

Overall, only 18 percent of Americans said they would pick the passport with Trump's portrait, while 67 percent said they would pick the passport without the portrait, according to the poll.

Among independents, a critical voting bloc that was key to Trump's 2024 reelection, only 10 percent said they would pick the passport with his portrait. Seventy-three percent said they would not.

Only 19 percent of Americans approved of the Trump passports, with 62 percent disapproving of the announcements, according to the poll.

The poll surveyed 4,559 adults on April 29, 2026.
