Ex-Marine Fired by Houston Police After Viral Video's ‘Disturbing' Racism
A Texaspolice department confirmed Friday that it had fired one of its officers after she shared a racial slur-filled rant on her personal Instagram account.
In a statement shared to social media, Houston Police Department said Officer Ashley Gonzalez was no longer employed by the department, after initially suspending her when the clip, in which she used a particular slur at least 25 times, went viral.
"The behavior exhibited by Ashley Gonzalez was abhorrent, disgusting, and entirely unacceptable," Chief J. Noe Diaz, Jr., said in the statement. "It is deeply disturbing and has no place in law enforcement or in our community."
The former Marine’s firing fits into a longstanding national pattern in which police departments have argued that racist or violent speech on social media-even when made off duty-can undermine public trust and officers' ability to do their jobs, particularly in court or community‑facing roles.
Courts have increasingly weighed in on that issue, often siding with departments when speech is found to erode public confidence or departmental effectiveness.
