Low gas tank leads to big win for MD lottery player. ‘Husband didn’t believe me’
A couple’s car low on gas led them to a huge lottery prize in Maryland, officials said.
A pair from Fallston found themselves in Bel Air while running errands and decided they needed to refill their gas tank, according to an Aug. 11 news release by the Maryland Lottery.
The couple had no idea an otherwise uneventful errand would land them a $150,000 prize, officials said.
The woman had two winning tickets in her purse and decided to go inside the station and cash them, officials said.
“If I hadn’t had those two tickets, I never would have gone in,” the retired office manager told officials. “My husband was taking care of the gas, so I went in to cash them.”
She used the winnings to buy two $10 More Money scratch-offs and scratched the first ticket, which was a dud, officials said.
Then she turned her attention to the second ticket — the big winner, officials said.
“It looked like $50,000, but I knew there was no way it could be, so I got out my glasses,” she told officials.
The woman was wrong but in the best way possible: She had missed the 1 in front of the $50,000, officials said.
“My husband didn’t believe me. He was so sure that I was reading the ticket incorrectly that he didn’t even pull over to look at it,” she said.
The couple plan share the top prize with their family, officials said.
Bel Air is about a 30-mile drive northeast from Baltimore.
