A grocery shopper decided to splurge on a scratch-off lottery ticket at a Publix in Florida — and won a $1 million prize.

Oscar Lopez Peluszkiewiez won a life-changing windfall in the $1,000,000 A Year For Life Spectacular game, the Florida Lottery announced May 13.

The Cape Coral man bought his $50 ticket at the Publix Super Market at Shops at Village Walk in Fort Myers, beating the 1-in-185,709 odds to win a second-tier prize of $1 million, records show.

The 58-year-old headed up to Tallahassee to claim his prize, leaving with a lump sum of $640,000, lottery officials said.

The southwest Florida Publix store received a $2,000 bonus for selling the lucky scratcher.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
