Lottery player asks his wife to check ticket, but she tosses it aside. ‘Look again’
As a Maryland contractor browsed lottery tickets while picking up a soda at a 7-Eleven after work, a “sparkly” one caught his eye.
But it wasn’t enough to buy just one shimmery $50,000 Cash ticket, Maryland Lottery officials said in a Feb. 5 news release.
No, the Brooklyn Park man had to follow his faithful “technique,” which is rooted in his belief that the odds of finding a winning ticket are higher if you buy a few at a time.
“I saw that the roll only had a few tickets left, so I bought all three,” the man told lottery officials.
It’s a good thing he followed his trusty “technique,” lottery officials said.
“I scanned the first two; they were not winners but that third ticket sure was,” the man told lottery officials.
The man won $50,000, the game’s top prize, lottery officials said.
But, even after checking his ticket on two scanners, he still wasn’t convinced.
“I was so amped, but I still wasn’t sure,” the winner said. “So, I went back inside to have the cashier check it.”
After the cashier confirmed his win, the man rushed home to share the news with his wife, he told lottery officials.
He handed the scratch-off ticket to his wife, asking her to check if it was a winner.
“She looked at it and said, ‘Nope,’ and tossed it to the side,” the husband said. “I told her to look again.”
The man told lottery officials he plans to spend his winnings on credit card bills and home improvements.
Brooklyn Park is about a 6-mile drive south from Baltimore.
