41-year-old camping in Grand Canyon dies during the hike out, rangers say
A 41-year-old camped in the Grand Canyon, then died during his trek out, rangers said.
The man was found unresponsive at about 6:45 a.m. June 16 on the Bright Angel Trail in Arizona, the National Park Service said in a news release.
He was found less than a half-mile from the Pipe Creek River Resthouse, officials said.
Bystanders and park workers tried to resuscitate him, but he died.
The hiker had camped at the Bright Angel Campground near Phantom Ranch and was on his way out of the canyon when he died, officials said.
His death is being investigated.
The Bright Angel Trail is one of the most popular hikes in the Grand Canyon National Park, park officials said.
“Offering big views, morning and afternoon shade, resthouses, vault toilets, and drinking water during the summer, this trail offers an excellent first trip into the canyon,” officials said.
The 15.3-miles out-and-back hike is steep and challenging, according to AllTrails. It’s not recommended hikers complete it in one day.
