84-year-old dies when her car crashes through garage and sinks in pond, TN officials say
An 84-year-old woman died after her car sunk in a nearby neighborhood pond in Tennessee, officials say,
First responders arrived to a pond on Constitution Drive in Chattanooga to perform a “water rescue” after receiving reports of a submerged car around 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12, according to a Chattanooga Fire Department news release on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The woman inside the car appeared to have driven “through the wall of her garage and into the pond,” the fire department said. An initial investigation into the crash showed the car traveled about 35 feet from the residence to the pond it sank in, according to the fire department’s update on Facebook.
Nearby construction workers made multiple attempts to save the woman, but their equipment weighed them down in the water, officials said.
“When firefighters arrived, the vehicle was completely underwater and they worked to stabilize the car,” officials said on X.
Rescue divers pulled the 84-year-old out, and she was transported to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead, officials said.
Her identity has not been publicly released.
The crash is still under investigation by the Chattanooga Police Department.
