Hikers reach summit after six-hour trek — but then get stranded, Hawaii rescuers say
A group of hikers was rescued after trekking for six hours and getting stranded on a Hawaii summit, officials said.
The four hikers were about 4 miles from the start of the Moanalua Middle Ridge Trail in Moanalua Valley when they called for help at about 2:20 p.m. on Monday, March 27, the Honolulu Fire Department said in a news release.
After arriving shortly before 2:30 p.m., the fire department said it began to search for the group by air and came up with a ground search plan.
The fire department said it airlifted and dropped off a rescuer to search for the hikers by foot.
The rescuer found the group around 3:10 p.m., confirming none of the hikers were injured, and led them to an area to be airlifted, according to the fire department.
The department said it transported the hikers in pairs to a “nearby landing zone.”
The Moanalua Middle Ridge, which is about 10 miles north of Honolulu, is considered “challenging,” according to HAWAIʻI Magazine. The 11- to 12-mile trek takes about eight hours to complete.
