22-year-old man plummets off cliff to his death near Oregon hot springs, cops say
A 22-year-old died after falling from a cliff at an Oregon reservoir, authorities said.
The Salem-area man, whose identity has not been released, fell off a cliff at Cougar Reservoir near the Terwilliger Hot Springs on Feb. 18, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office said in a Feb. 22 news release.
When first responders arrived, they saw a “man lying motionless on the ground at the bottom of a cliff,” the sheriff’s office said. However, they could not reach him because of the “extreme terrain.”
Shortly after, members of the sheriff’s office search and rescue team arrived and “used ropes to rappel down the cliff,” according to the sheriff’s office.
The man was pronounced dead, the sheriff’s office said.
Deputies said the man’s fall “was likely accidental.”
Cougar Reservoir is about 60 miles east of Eugene.
