A young girl is dead after her mother stabbed her at a park in Texas, officials say.

The 5-year-old girl was stabbed at Spring Creek Park in Tomball on Sunday, Oct. 16, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said on Twitter. The incident happened before 1:43 p.m.

Tomball, population roughly 12,000, is 33 miles northwest of downtown Houston.

The girl was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, Gonzalez said.

Investigators say the girl’s mother, 37-year-old Melissa White Towne, drove to an emergency room after the stabbing, according to Gonzalez.

Towne’s daughter was found in her vehicle, “partially wrapped” in mesh and plastic bags, Gonzalez said. She had a large cut across her neck, and what appeared to be ligature marks, officials said.

Towne is facing a charge of murder and has been booked into the Harris County Jail, Gonzalez said.

An investigation is underway.
