Rescue crews recover body of diver missing off coast of popular California island

Rescuers recovered the body of a diver who went missing off the coast of Catalina, a popular California island, authorities say.

They found the diver’s body in about 60 feet of water, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said on Twitter.

Officials identified him as Justin Hoang, a 42-year-old Huntington Beach resident, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Details about the circumstances of Hoang’s disappearance and death were not available Tuesday. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the disappearance, the department said on Twitter.

The dive ship “Cee Ray” first contacted the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach watchstanders at 2:10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 3, to report the missing diver, according to a news release.

Watchstanders launched two helicopter crews, a 29-foot response boat crew, and the Coast Guard Cutter Narwhal, the release said.

Catalina Island is 22 miles southwest of Los Angeles.
