Determined police spend hours rescuing stuck puppies with a mop, NJ cops say
When New Jersey State Police got reports that three puppies had fallen into a trench in the woods, a pair of household items turned into rescue tools.
In an Aug. 12 post on the police Facebook page, troopers from Mercer County said they spent hours trying to fish out the puppies using a “makeshift catch pole” made from a mop handle and rope.
Not all of the dogs were in the mood for such an ordeal, the post said.
“After hours of effort, the troopers were only able to save two of the three puppies because one puppy got tired of waiting and decided to take a nap,” police said. “The troopers returned the next day to save the third puppy who was now wide awake and waiting to be rescued.”
Someone who later adopted one of the puppies named their new dog Trooper to honor the police efforts.
“As a first responder you never know what the situation may be and we need to be creative,” wrote one commenter on the post. “Thank you for your service.”
“Thank you for caring about saving animals as much as you care about saving people,” said another.
