What’s it like leaving California for Texas? Mom shares her insights on TikTok
Former California mom Sam Speiller is turning Texan — and sharing her transformation on TikTok.
Seat belt burns, co-existing with spiders and incessant sweating are some of the highlights on Speiller’s now-viral TikTok series that has reached millions.
“I moved from California to Texas one year ago and I have changed so much already, I hardly recognize myself y’all,” Speiller, who now lives in Austin based on her hashtags, said on her account @unmitigated.gall.
Speiller’s audience, which consists of other Texans, has mixed responses to her videos. Some tell her to “go back where you belong,” while others reprimand the Lone Star gatekeepers online for being hostile to new company.
“The Texas state motto is ’friendship,’ and telling people to go back where they came from isn’t very friendly,” one person replied to someone who told Speiller to move back to California.
“As a fellow Texan, I live for your videos because they are spot on,” another Texan commented. “Please don’t stop.”
Some of Speiller’s revelations about living in Texas for a full year include the following, she says in her videos:
“You can start sweating when you’re still wet from the shower.”
“Texans on the internet are way meaner than Texans are in real life.”
“There’s something called a tarantula hawk.”
“If someone calls you princess, they don’t mean it in a good way.”
She also shares her experiences at Texas landmarks like Buc-ees, every local’s favorite gas station stop, which got over 1 million views.
Speiller assured her viewers that the series was meant to be lighthearted, and despite the fun she pokes at her new home state, she does enjoy living in Texas.
