14-year-old boy blows off his hand playing with fireworks, Washington officials say
A 14-year-old blew off his hand while playing with fireworks in Washington, fire officials said.
First responders were on the scene around 5 p.m. Monday, June 20, in Federal Way, South King Fire and Rescue said on Twitter.
The boy was near a basketball court by Saghalie Middle School, KING-TV reported.
“His life is changed forever, over, you know, one poor decision to play with fireworks and now the trajectory of his future is completely altered,” South King Fire and Rescue Capt. Brad Chaney told the outlet.
The teen lost his left hand in the incident, officials said. His right hand was also injured.
“Please leave the fireworks to the professionals and attend a public show instead,” the fire department said in the tweet.
Blasting off fireworks and purchasing them in unincorporated parts of King County will now be prohibited this Fourth of July, according to officials.
Hot, dry weather prompted the ban on fireworks in these areas last year when dangerous conditions grew.
