An 18-year-old was celebrating the last day of school with his friends when he was swept out to sea, California news outlets reported.

The group went to Mission Beach in San Diego on Tuesday, June 14, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue.

At about 3:30 p.m., a lifeguard spotted the group of swimmers struggling in the water.

The lifeguard rushed to help the group and pulled two teens from the water. One of the group, however, didn’t resurface, San Diego Fire-Rescue said.

Crews searched for 75 minutes for the missing man, and the rescue mission turned into a recovery effort.

“US Coast Guard and San Diego Lifeguards currently using side sonar in the water & searching from the air,” officials said on Twitter. “Sundown ends the efforts tonight. Lifeguards will regroup in the morning.”

Rescuers told CBS 8 a helicopter and watercraft were used to search for the missing 18-year-old.

The man was part of a group who had recently graduated from Crawford High School, 10 News reported. The group was celebrating their last day of school, according to FOX 5.
