Update: At about 5 p.m. May 30, officials said the man’s body was pulled from the lake. He was identified in a news release as Thomas OLeary.

Original story: A dad on a tubing trip with his daughter has vanished on a Michigan lake, officials said.

Rescuers are continuing to search for the missing man, who may have drowned on Devils Lake on Sunday, May 29, according to the Lenawee County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said the 39-year-old disappeared after two families gathered on the waterfront for Memorial Day weekend. They were visiting from Sylvania, Ohio, which lies on the Michigan border, officials said.

During their stay at a rental cottage, the families set out to have fun on the water. The dad was getting ready to go tubing when he and his daughter “fell off the tube.”

“The male victim went under the water and never came back to the surface,” officials wrote in a news release. “The child who was in the water is fine and has no medical issues. The children were all wearing life vests and the male victim was not wearing a life vest.”

Officials said alcohol wasn’t a factor in the incident, which happened at about 2 p.m.

Crews from several agencies rushed to help find the missing dad, eventually using a dive team and sonar equipment in their search. Another round of searching was expected to continue May 30, officials said.

Devils Lake is in the Manitou Beach area, roughly 95 miles southwest of Detroit. The 1,330-acre body of water is popular for boating, fishing and other recreational activities, according to the Michigan Economic Development Corporation and Visit Lenawee websites.
