Watch daughter of Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer pursue own legacy on ‘American Idol’
A California singer comes from a “musical family” — but wanted to carve her own path on “American Idol.”
Ava Maybee, daughter of a Red Hot Chili Peppers band member, got her wish when she advanced to the next round of the singing competition show.
“I like to keep my music separate from my dad cause it’s really important for me to make it on my own,” Maybee said in a video that aired before her Hollywood audition. “So, I’m here doing it by myself and I’m just so excited to be here.”
Maybee, a 20-year-old college student, earned a spot on the March 28 episode after she received praise for her alto voice in the first round of the competition. During her initial audition, celebrity judge Katy Perry was also a fan of the way the contestant paired two patterns: floral and leopard print, McClatchy News reported.
This time around, Maybee revealed more about herself, telling viewers that she is from Los Angeles and grew up around music. She’s the daughter of Chad Smith, a drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
“I have never been a part of something this big or this exciting before in my life,” Maybee said before video showed her taking the stage to sing a cover of “Roxanne” by The Police.
Her second audition was also a hit. On its YouTube page, “American Idol” called the singer a force “to be reckoned with,” and she eventually advanced on the show.
Maybee took to Instagram to share her latest feat, writing: “I made it to the next round! If you thought this round was intense, you won’t believe #Duets!”
