15-year-old fatally stabs middle schooler in fight over cellphone, Georgia cops say
A 15-year-old is accused of fatally stabbing a middle school student in a fight over a cellphone, Georgia police said.
Two groups of teens got into a fight over the phone near McDonough Middle School in McDonough around 9:15 p.m. on Oct. 23, police spokesman Maj. Kyle Helgerson told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
A 15-year-old then pulled out a pocket knife and fatally stabbed a 13-year-old McDonough Middle School student, police told Fox 5 Atlanta and other media outlets.
“It’s more so traumatizing to know about a kid getting stabbed,” a former student told WSB-TV. “I did hear some screaming, but it was crazy because I couldn’t do anything about it.”
The 15-year-old was arrested and is facing murder charges, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.
Other teens involved in the altercation include a 17-year-old who is facing unspecified charges and a 14-year-old who was “charged with affray and was released to the parents,” the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
“Our condolences go out to this student’s family and school community during this difficult time,” a McDonough School District spokesperson told McClatchy News. “We will have counselors available to speak with any student or staff member needing to speak with someone.”
The names of those involved are not being identified because they are juveniles.
“We cannot comment further on the matter as our understanding is the events surrounding this young person’s death are under investigation,” the spokesperson said.
McDonough is 30 miles northwest of Atlanta.
