Red Lobster workers rescue very rare creature that was going to be dinner in Ohio

A rare sea creature owes its life to workers at a Red Lobster in Ohio.

Staff at the Cuyahoga Falls restaurant received a live lobster shipment this month and noticed something unusual about one of the lobsters: It was blue, WKYC reported.

Blue lobsters are rare — only one in 2 million lobsters is estimated to have a blue shell, the Akron Zoo said in a news release.

American lobsters are typically brownish-green in color and usually only sport colored speckles near their their joints, National Geographic reported.

Lobsters that are all blue have a genetic problem that causes their bodies to make too much of a specific protein, which turns their shells blue, according to the magazine.

Lobsters can also be orange or yellow, but white lobsters are the rarest of all, occurring once in every 100 million lobsters, Boston.com reported.

After the staff at Red Lobster discovered the blue lobster — initially named Clawde in honor of the restaurant’s mascot — they contacted Monterey Bay Aquarium in California which runs a conservation program called Seafood Watch.

Seafood Watch reached out to the Akron Zoo, which quickly began preparing a home for the lobster. The zoo picked it up on Friday, the Akron Beacon Journal reported.

On Sunday, Clawde underwent a veterinary exam and doctors discovered it’s a girl. The team changed her name Clawdia.

She now lives in the zoo’s Komodo Kingdom building in a special tank dubbed the she shed.

But fans will have to wait a while to see her in person — the Komodo Kingdom building is currently closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
