All Irma debris on track for pickup by end of the year
Cleanup in the aftermath of Tropical Storm Irma is on track to finish by year’s end.
As the process winds down, county officials will have a better gauge of the precise end date, but county officials estimate debris collections wrapping up around Christmas.
“Once they get closer to substantial completion of this process, we’ll put out information letting people know the final days of Irma debris collection,” Macon-Bibb County spokesman Chris Floore said in an email. “The crews will make final passes through neighborhoods, and people can submit debris piles through See Click Fix, so that it can all be picked up.”
The crews got a brief break over the Thanksgiving holiday, with pickups suspended from Thursday through Sunday. Since the debris collections began in October, more than 50,000 cubic yards have been picked up, according to Macon-Bibb County Emergency Management Agency.
“We want to get as much Irma debris collected, so it’s important for people to make sure it’s all on the curb cut up and in separate piles,” Floore said.
If a pile has not been collected, residents can report it via See Click Fix or by calling EMA at 478-832-6300.
One of the fallen trees that has yet to be picked up is on Poplar Street outside of the Macon-Bibb County Government Center.
Asked by a commissioner this week why the tree hasn’t been removed, Mayor Robert Reichert had an explanation.
“When (residents) say they haven’t picked it up on our street, we say, well, they haven’t picked up outside the Government Center,” he said.
